Paint and Turpentine
A summer breeze blows past the window.?It smells like paint and turpentine.?There's fresh wallpaper going in the kitchen.?This type of place will suit her fine.
And she's waited.?She's waited for quite a while...?to find this place,?and to give it some style.?She's waited.?She's waited for quite some time...?to be all alone,?and to make it on her own.
At certain times she feels mistaken.?Ain't it funny how fast your plans can change??Every call has been another chance she's taken. ?Every time they turn her down she takes the blame.
She sits on the couch and reads IKEA.?She looks at a bed that would be good to buy.?She smiles because she likes the whole idea.?No one's around to ask her when or why.?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I Used To
You were never more concerned.?I was never more wrong.?Should have seen it from the get go.?We didn't tell each other lies.?It wouldn't feel right and besides...?avoiding topics works just as well.?Has it occurred to you I realize what I put you through??It was all about a voice.?Now from the outside I can see I burned you and your pride?I thought I didn't have the choice.
So when you ask me if I have regrets? I do, I do.?And when you ask me if this is the best it gets? I wish I knew, I wish I knew.?If you ask me if I fear that I'm being insincere...?if you ask me if I ever think it through...?I used to, I used to.
We're not better off alone.?We're not better off apart.?We're not better off at all.?I'm not punishing you. You're not punishing me. ?We're not waiting for us both to fall.?I swore I loved you from the start and always will ?and I would never take those words away? There's no better man, that's why it's hard to understand...?I still can't stay.
We can tear this all apart.?We can turn it upside-down.?We can throw it in the laundry.?Your strength and beauty stands alone, so far above me and my own.?What I have given you is far less than what you have me.?You took my hands, held me up and let me stand?when I thought no one had a chance.?I swore I loved you from the start and always will.?We were far beyond romance.?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Forbidden Thoughts
It was late. I remember so well I was playing a bar down the street...?and on break as I sat down to drink I was stopped by a man who wanted to sing.?He said he was not much of a show...that wouldn't matter at a time like this.?If I would only lend him my stage,?he would show me something not to be missed.
He stood... not much to see from his place on the ground.?And he walked onto the stage. He took my guitar like a father lifts a child.?Careful and thoughtful he was.?I was foolish to think he was simply another.?There was no mistaking for what he was capable of.
He played. Not like the way I had heard a man play before.?And I watched the bartender, in shock, drop a handful of change to the floor.?The crowd that was so unforgivably loud sat silent and staring at what stood before them:?A man whose passion came spilling out grabbing the people who tried to ignore him.?Fearless and raging, freakishly lustful he was.?It was hard not to hear, each word from his mouth spilling like forbidden thoughts.??In a haze the room filled with tension.?People were blushing and staring excitedly.?He was crazy electric...causing us all to feel helpless and lustful.?He held on without hesitation...all of us hoping we wouldn't get caught.?I saw the people around me were sharing a moment of forbidden thought.
Then just like a thief he finished his song, his head held back,?sweat falling down his spine...causing his shirt to cling right to his skin?inside-out he had nothing to hide. ?He moved like no one was watching, but everyone's eyes were on him.?He walked straight out the door through a crowd of hungry people wanting more.?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Short Song
I had the most beautiful vision of you?about half and inch from your face.?I had the most beautiful vision of you?about half an inch from your face.
And I've watched you from every angle.?There's not much left to see.?But the closer I get to you, the more beautiful you seem to be.
I heard the most attractive tone in your voice?when you barely said a thing.?I've been in the most ordinary places?and I can still hear that tone ring.
And I've heard you when you're laughing,?I've heard you when you're angry,?I've heard you when you argue 'till the end.?And it may seem funny now, but we can work this out somehow.?I can't wait to hear you make that tone again.
Yes it may seem funny now, but we can work this out somehow, ?And I can't wait to hear you make that tone again.?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Take Me Home / How Can It Get Any Worse?
Work is slow. The power's down. The streets are crowded hot and hazy.?Ambition's big, but money's poor. We're scared to live and Bush is crazy.?It's hard to say what happens next. There are rumours it's the best it gets.?We truthfully appear to be cursed. ?How could it get any worse?
Take me home where the winter's always white?and when you look up in the sky you see the stars at night.?Take me home to my family, ?and we'll sit in the garden and watch Glorianne's children grow.
I'm out of gigs, out of rhyme, out to lunch, and out of time.?I ran too quickly, ran too fast...made it so it wouldn't last.?There must be something better for me?'round the corner wait and see.?But truthfully there's no where to run.?It's like throwing wooden arrows at the sun.??I haven't had a breath or air...working hard and getting nowhere.?I'm climbing fast but slipping faster...waiting for this huge disaster ?to come along and change us all.?Just like before we can't ignore that fact that we have struck upon a curse.?How can it get any worse?
Home, where the people are friendly ?and they drive a little slower in the summertime.?Home, where they laugh a little louder ?and they play a little harder 'cause they have more time....?to my family and we'll sit in the garden ?and watch Glorianne's children grow.?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Fate
Hiding out is nowhere to be.?Feeling doubt is nothing to fear.
Big chance coming, you pull all the stops.?It's funny as you fall it never fails to shock you.?Big chance gone, you're proven wrong,?Maybe next time you'll listen when it talks to you.
When it talks to you.
It's coming from above it is your fate it's best to listen.?It's coming from within it is your fate you've gone all wrong.?Listen to the song but the TV's on. ?The rhythm's strange and the words are hard to follow.?It says it all. You hope it's lying. ?It tells the truth, and the truth is hard to swallow.
Hard to swallow.
Twist of fate won't take you back.?Avoiding mistakes was never quite your forté.?Twist of fate won't take you back.?Save it and replay it to your kid some day.
Hiding out is nowhere to be.?Feeling doubt is nothing to fear.?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Futon Song
In my room there's a futon.?It's black and old and when I lay on it, it fits me into the groove I made from sleeping through the years.?And I know that it has seen its day, from freezing nights to rolls in the hay.?It's heard its share of phone calls and it soaked up many tears.?Sometimes I think I should get a new one. I'll be sorry when I'm old and gray and my back's all twisted up from the bed that I had when I was young.?But I think it came from Barrie...from a house full of guys. ?They drank lots of beer and had lots of women and god knows what else they had done.?So now I've got a soft spot for my futon. It's seen its share of days.?I've got a soft spot for my futon in, oh, so many ways? When I go outside to get in my car I think it's the cutest think I've seen. ?It's green. Sometimes it seats four, but uncomfortably. ?When I start him up he makes burbling sounds. ?When he's cold his fan belt screeches...?and I know the neighbors don't like it when I come home at three thirty. ?Yes, I know he needs a new muffler and a new transmission would be good. ?But he still runs regardless and I have extra insurance just in case. ?When I stop beside expensive cars with beautiful women who have great hair, I tell my car don't be jealous and that he never has to win the race.?Because I've got a soft spot for my car. He's seen his share of days.?I've got a soft spot for my car in, oh, so many ways.??I've got a great big Siamese cat.?When she meows it sounds like a scream and I swear if she were human she'd be one of those people who talks forever. ?She's been around for fifteen years. We cater to her to keep her from meowing. ?She makes a lot of irrational decisions but we know she's really clever.?Sometimes my mom will call me up and say maybe we should put my cat down.?I say, "Mom how could you after all that she's been through".?But my mom says my cat runs the house, she wakes her up each morning at five and if only I were living at home I'd feel like I should put her down too.?But I've got a soft spot for my cat. She's seen her share of days.?I've got a soft spot for my cat in oh, so many ways.?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Leave You Behind
I guess I've got to go now.?I never thought I'd see the day when I could pass you in the hall, ?leave without a call to tell you that I'm going to leave you behind.?I finally made up my mind.
You picked a time to show up.?I guess you figured maybe you could have a turn around, ?keep me hanging on to something strong enough ?so that it might change my mind.?I've got to leave you behind.
Yes this might take some time.?This might make you cry.?But, I've got to leave you behind.
And so you had a bad day.?You weren't exactly planning on a situation where you couldn't win?or have a chance to fool the one who won't believe you this time.?I've got to leave you behind.
I know I should have said bye.?I didn't really want to give you half a chance to have another go?or you know how you always have to put weight on my spine.?I've got to leave you behind.
Yes this might take some time.?This might make you cry.?But I've got to leave you behind.?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Day of Your Wedding
Good fathers come in all shapes and sizes.?The first man to love you. The first man you trust.?Good fathers leave a lifetime of memory.?A handful of wisdom to carry with us:
Moments of anger will give you a headache.?Moments of peace will help you survive.?Moments of truth will bring redemption.?Moments left waiting will pass you by.
Good fathers know when it's best to be silent.?He'll stay up all night just to wait for a call.?He'll put his foot down if he knows you deserve it.?He'll tell you he loves you for nothing at all.
Here you stand glowing the day of your wedding.?Waiting to marry the man that you love.?Don't you go worrying. Your daddy's watching.?A good father's love can be felt from above.?--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Across the Room
From across the room, I imagine you.?Could it be from that look on your face??You've elaborate plans to get me out of here.?Are you scared I will take her place?
I ain't got no plans to stay.?So please won't you let me have my way??And I promise I won't leave you lonely.?At least not until the morning.??You have such a face, and it makes me weak.?I can see that it's not for good.?And the way you talk makes it hard to speak.?Are you doing what you know you should??--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Badminton Song
Grade nine Intramural badminton can be serious stuff,?especially when me and the boy that I like are in the finals?of the co-ed pairs.?We're doing so well...feeling like we were superstars...?until the boy that I like spikes the birdie and I catch it with my head.
Why, why did it hit me so hard??Out of nowhere it flew like a dagger in the night into my eye .. and it stung like a bitch? Why, why did it choose there and then??With my one good eye I had no more depth perception?and I wanted to cry.... why?
With 2D vision badminton can be pretty hard.?Flailing my racket in the air and hitting nothing?made me lose the game.?The boy that I liked didn't like me anymore.?And to top it all off I had to work after school at Quik Mart?with my big black shiner.
Why, why did it hit me so hard??Out of nowhere it flew like a dagger in the night into my eye and it stung like a bitch? Why, why did it choose there and then??With my one good eye I had no more depth perception?and I wanted to cry.... why? why? why?
